I made a journey to the Black Forest in June
1973 to see the last three remaining Preussen P8,
Baureihe 38, in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn. |

The first train left Horb in
the early morning at
5:30am with commuters for the Stuttgart region.

Along the way we saw the sun
rise for a beautiful day.

And there is
work to do.
|
|
|
Once
the most numerous steam engines in Europe, a total of almost
3500 were built. They lasted nearly 70 years in passenger
train service and even outlasted engines that were built to
replace them.
|
|
In the afternoon we arrived
in Freudenstadt and the engine got a rest by the shed. |

The mesmerizing smell of a
coal burner, the last three P8's in service with the
Deutsche Bundesbahn were in the Black Forest region in
southern Germany.

Last chance view of the P8.
Soon they were no more.
